A UN report examining the extent of opium production and cultivation in Afghanistan. According to the report, the total opium poppy cultivation in the country did not change from 2009, remaining at 123,000 hectares. However, total opium production in 2010 was down by an estimated 48% from 2009. This sharp decline was due to the spread of a disease that affected opium fields in the major growing provinces, particularly Hilmand and Kandahar.
